H. Wayne Snider - Distinguished Guest Lecturer Series
On Wednesday, February 4th, 2009, the Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma began its Spring 2009 H. Wayne Snider Distinguished Guest Lecturer Series with Tom Nerney, the Chairman, President, and CEO of United States Liability Insurance Group. This is the signature semester event of the Sigma Chapter, as key people within the Actuarial Science and Risk Management and Insurance industry from all over the United States come to Temple University to personally speak to our members. All weekly speaker presentations are held in Alter Hall Auditorium on Wednesdays from 11:40am to 12:30pm. Following each of the speaker presentations, faculty advisor Dr. R.B. Drennan and a number of Sigma Chapter members accompany the speaker to lunch in the Diamond Club of Mitten Hall.

Professional Exam Completion: Fall 2008 - Spring 2009
For students in the Risk Management and Actuarial Science fields, passing exams given by professional societies is of critical importance to their professional development. The Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma encourages our members to take these professional exams while still in college. These rigorous exams are given by various educational organizations in the Risk Management and Actuarial Science fields, and the Sigma Chapter is proud of our members who have completed this difficult task. These include exams for the CEBS, CPCU and ARM designations, as well as actuarial exams sponsored by the Society of Actuaries. The following is a list of the exams passed by our members, as well as a brief overview of what that exam entails.

Contribition to Alter Hall’s ‘Take a Seat’ Campaign
Thomas Nerney, Chairman, President, and CEO of United States Liability Insurance Group, has generously donated 20 seats from Alter Hall’s ‘Take A Seat’ campaign to Gamma Iota Sigma. The seats are offered to members at $250 each, a $25 discount off of the original price. Each purchased seat features a bronze plate engraved with Gamma Iota Sigma’s symbol, the student’s name, and year of graduation.

3rd Annual Beef and Beverage Fundraiser
The Sigma Chapter held its 3rd annual Beef and Beverage on Saturday, March 21st, 2009 at Buckhead Saloon in Philadelphia. Proceeds from the event will go to the Sigma Chapter’s charity of choice for this academic school year, the Children’s Alopecia Project.

Spring 2009 Intern Career Reception
The Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma was proud to host its annual Risk Management and Insurance Intern Career Reception on Monday, March 2nd, 2009. Twenty two companies registered and more than 125 students attended the event in The Great Court in Mitten Hall. In addition, Sigma Chapter was able to welcome back 18 alumni of our program, who were representing their current employers and assisting with recruiting efforts.

Mitch Cole - Class of 1970 (MBA Class of 1972)
Sigma Chapter was proud to have Mitch Cole speak to students on Friday, March 20, 2009. Mr. Cole, a Temple Risk Management and Insurance graduate, is a Principal at Towers Perrin in Stamford, CT, where he focuses on the firm’s strategic benefit financing practices and growing the Legacy Pensions Solutions portion of the business. Mr. Cole has over 30 years of experience in employee benefits consulting.

Happy Hours
Sigma Chapter and the Alumni Affairs team would like to thank all of the alumni who attended our Happy Hour at Public House on Tuesday February 24th, 2009 and Tuesday March 31, 2009 at Kildares in King of Prussia. We look forward to seeing you at our next happy hour in the near future!
Alumni Basketball Game
On Sunday February 8, 2008, faculty, students and alumni joined together to watch the Temple Owls take on the Rhode Island Rams. The event was held in the Fox School’s box in the Liacouras center. The Owl’s men’s team defeated the Rams by the score of 68-62. Dionte Christmas scored 19 points and Lavoy Allen broke his career by putting up 23 points and also grabbing 13 rebounds.
